Focus: This module will equip you with the vocabulary essential for success in your chosen industry, such as finance, marketing, or human resources.

Learning Objectives:

    • Identify and define industry-specific vocabulary from case studies, business articles, and glossaries.
    • Apply this vocabulary accurately in written and spoken communication relevant to your chosen field.
    • Participate confidently in role-playing exercises that simulate real-world business scenarios.

Materials:

  • A selection of case studies and business articles relevant to your chosen industry (provided by instructor)
  • Industry-specific glossaries and dictionaries (provided by instructor or accessible online)
  • Whiteboard or projector for presentations

Lesson Procedure:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

  • The instructor will begin by introducing the concept of industry-specific vocabulary and its importance in professional communication.
  • Briefly discuss the chosen industry and its key areas of specialization.

2. Building Vocabulary (40 minutes)

  • Divide students into small groups.
  • Each group will be assigned a case study or business article related to the industry.
  • Instruct students to:
    • Skim the text to identify keywords and unfamiliar terms.
    • Use glossaries, dictionaries, or online resources to define these terms.
    • Create a list of 10-15 industry-specific words with their definitions.

3. Class Discussion & Presentations (30 minutes)

  • Each group will present their list of industry-specific vocabulary to the class.
  • Encourage discussion around the meaning and usage of the terms in context.
  • The instructor will provide additional explanations, synonyms, and real-world examples where necessary.

4. Applying Vocabulary (40 minutes)

  • The instructor will distribute role-playing scenarios related to the chosen industry (e.g., a marketing team brainstorming a new campaign, an HR manager conducting a job interview, a finance professional presenting a budget report).
  • Divide students into pairs and assign each pair a scenario.
  • Instruct students to:
    • Review the industry-specific vocabulary learned in the previous activity.
    • Practice using the vocabulary in their assigned role-playing scenario.
    • Focus on using the terms accurately and naturally within the context of the situation.

5. Role-Playing Activities (40 minutes)

  • Each pair will enact their assigned role-playing scenario in front of the class.
  • Encourage the class to observe and pay attention to the use of industry-specific vocabulary.
  • After each role-play, facilitate a discussion about the effectiveness of the communication and the appropriate use of industry-specific terms.

6. Wrap-Up & Reflection (10 minutes)

  • Summarize the key industry-specific vocabulary covered in the lesson.
  • Briefly discuss the importance of ongoing vocabulary development in professional settings.
